Charles Serruya
Director/Writer/Sculptor/
Painter

Since the mid-80s, Charles Serruya has been developing a graphic work that uses Chinese shadow and cut out silhouette. Photography, film, projection and lighting are achieved in conjunction with achievements and collaborations in fashion and live performances. Charles Serruya claims a certain idea of the baroque but avoids overbidding. He assumes himself and executes simply, without minimalism. A poetry devoid of blandness emerges from his works, as if a character escaped from a vase of ancient Greece reciting verses from Prévert. A journey that transcends references without restraint takes him on the path of nomadism. Portraitist in his spare time, he improvises a traveling portrait cabinet. The subject is thus staged in situ surrounded by its real or imagined attributes. These are not official portraits, but the fantasy of the personality is manifested in light lines. The person’s traits are stretched until they become a thread; a rudimentary wire, which becomes sophisticated and whose effects multiply according to the subject: portrait, nude or fresco. A thread of joy that we follow in the tracks of its controlled complications. Watch a Teaser of Charles’ Cinematic Work here.
